“US presidential candidate Giuliani evokes Catholic upbringing on campaign trail”

August 10th, 2007

The AP has this report (which, btw, mentions this website).

Wanted: Political ad for Catholics Against Rudy

July 25th, 2007

We know that there are a lot of talented folks out there who are vehemently opposed to Rudy Giuliani being the GOP standard-bearer in the 2008 presidential race, and who are looking for an opportunity to contribute to the cause.

Well, here’s your chance.

Catholics Against Rudy is holding a contest to see who can produce the best political advertisement video for CAR based on the substance of this website. You won’t receive any money if you win, but you will be recognized here for your efforts, and perhaps elsewhere (keep in mind that CAR’s founder has already appeared on Hardball with Chris Matthews and CAR has been mentioned by several major publications and blogs recently). More importantly, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you played a key role in helping to prevent Rudy from receiving the GOP presidential nomination. And what could be better than that! :)

The contest starts today, and will end on August 17, 2007. The winner will be announced on August 27, 2007.

Rudy: Americans must “respect” those who choose to abort their children

July 25th, 2007

From the the Sojourners forum:

Giuliani, in explaining his support for abortion rights during a Republican debate, said, “We have to respect the fact that there are people who are equally religious, equally moral, who make a different decision about this. Should the government put them in jail?”

NARAL implicitly endorses Giuliani

July 18th, 2007

LifeNews.com has the details:

One of the top pro-abortion groups in the country told its membership last week that several of the main Republican presidential contenders couldn’t get its support because they’re pro-life on abortion. Of the leading names, only pro-abortion ex-New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was not included for criticism.

Gerson on Giuliani

July 18th, 2007

Michael Gerson nails it:

Another consequence of a Giuliani victory would be to place the Republican nominee in direct conflict with the Roman Catholic Church. For someone who aspires to be the fourth Roman Catholic to lead a major-party ticket, this is not a minor thing.

Giuliani is not only pro-choice. He has supported embryonic stem cell research and public funding for abortion. He supports the death penalty. He supports “waterboarding” of terror suspects and seems convinced that the conduct of the war on terrorism has been too constrained. Individually, these issues are debatable. Taken together, they are the exact opposite of Catholic teaching, which calls for a “consistent ethic of life” rather than its consistent devaluation. No one inspired by the social priorities of Pope John Paul II can be encouraged by the political views of Rudy Giuliani. Church officials who criticized John Kerry on abortion are anxious for the opportunity to demonstrate their bipartisanship by going after a Republican. Those attacks on Giuliani have already begun.

Across the country, there will doubtlessly be Giuliani Democrats who respond to a culture war against liberalism without the baggage of pro-life moralism. But there will also be Americans influenced by the teachings of John Paul II, who have been persuaded over the years to support Republicans mainly on the pro-life issue. Many are Reagan Democrats. And they will be less impressed by a conservatism purged of pro-life moralism — which they would see as a purge of compassion and humanity.

These are predictable results if the Republican nominee is not Reagan’s heir but Nixon’s political twin.

Still “under construction,” but the “Catholics Against Rudy” movement has officially launched!

July 8th, 2007

“Catholics Against Rudy” is up and running now, but we are still working on several matters, and will be doing so for the next several months. Here are just a few of the things that remain to be done:

(1) Finish work on CAR’s cafepress shop (yes, you can go ahead and purchase the items shown), where various and sundry gear are to be sold at cost to those who wish to help publicize our cause;

(2) construct an “activism” page, where faithful Catholics can print off fliers to hand out at the parish level that outline Mayor Giuliani’s abysmal record on life issues and traditional marriage, sign a petition committing to voting against Giuliani in the GOP presidential primary and/or engage in various types of grass-roots activism, etc.;

(3) prepare an FAQ page, and finish work on the “About” page, for the benefit of those who have questions about this website and its founder;

(4) finish work on the “Issues” pages (i.e., additional content, providing links where necessary to substantiate quotes/assertions); and

(5) general maintenance.

In the meantime, feel free to look around, and let us know what you think.  You can also join CAR’s Facebook and Myspace groups as a way of tracking the website’s progress, and publicly expressing your support of our cause.

Finally, if you operate a blog, and would like to become a member of the CAR blogroll, just place one of the images provided for here on your blog with a link to CAR, and then send an email to catholicsagainstrudy -at- gmail -dot com.  We will add your blog to the CAR blogroll ASAP.
